What is Backfill tag?

In the online marketing industry, a backfill tag is simply a backup tag or temporary replacement tag that acts as a backup for the main or original tag. The backup tag will serve ads on pages when the main tag isn’t in use, under troubleshooting or testing.

Example for Backfill tag

Let’s say you’re going to implement a new ad tag from the Media.net ad network. But now you’re using ads from Google AdSense.

Firstly, to serve Media.net ads, you need to implement an ad tag into your website to get verified by Media.net. In case, if you’re replacing the Google AdSense ad tag with Media.net, the ad placement will be blank and no ads will show until the verification complete.

In the meantime, you can use an ad tag as a backup to avoid losing your ad impressions. For that, you can use any tag. You may use the same Google AdSense tag.

The backup tag can be removed once the main tag is live.
